The Only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need by Andrew Tobias (Book Review)

Until three and a half years ago, I have never even considered investing. In fact, when I became eligible for the very first time to enroll in a matching 401K, I never raced to enroll because I just didn’t know any better. Big idiot move. My first instincts were why would I give them more money than they’re withholding already — I’m already giving them my soul!

I honestly can’t remember what made me buy Andrew Tobias’ book “The Only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need”. Maybe I got tired of hearing about investments and 401Ks and IRAs so I finally decided to take a step and seriously learn what it’s all about. So after reading dozens of reviews, and deciding what to buy between three books, I finally bought Tobias’ book on September 2018.

It’s no understatement — buying the book changed our lives. It’s what made us start to invest.

When I bought the book, our main objective was to learn how to invest. But it teaches you so much more than that. It’s packed with helpful and practical information all about personal finance.

One of the things that sets this book apart is Tobias’ sense of humor. It makes reading the whole book a lot easier! This really is the only investment book you’ll ever need AND also the only personal finance book you’ll ever need — well unless you want to day trade or have a career in finance that is.

But for us who just want to invest and let it grow over time, the book is enough to get you started — and THAT is the most important thing.

If you’re having trouble saving, the book would guide you with concrete examples on how to make your money go far. It’s packed with lists and resources guiding you on how and where you can save money on all kinds of spending: from buying food, clothes, entertainment, a car, getting the right kinds of credit cards — if you’re even getting them — down to the best kind of gift-wrapping paper to use! (Yep, Tobias covers it all…almost.)

It explains the foundations and, this is very important,  tells you HOW to invest your money from bonds to 401(k) to IRAs to stocks in a way that a complete beginner, like us, could understand.

The Only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need book is definitely packed full of information. To be honest, until now we don’t really understand a lot of the concepts and investment topics mentioned in the book yet. And we don’t have any intentions in the near future to totally master them.

We took what we needed at the moment to get started, and go back to the book whenever we need some guidance, perhaps on a new investment vehicle or strategy that we haven’t fully understood.

And that’s why it’s such a gem. It’s not a one-use-and-toss kind of book. It’s something that you could get value from as long as you’re dealing with finances.

To be clear, this was not the only resource we used when it comes to investing. We read a lot of articles and watched a lot of videos to educate ourselves before taking the step of opening our accounts and actually buying index funds and stocks. But it was definitely the push we needed to finally invest.
